The 90-day tourist visa followed by a border run is no longer the only option — and in many countries, it's getting riskier to rely on. More than 50 countries now offer formal visa programs for remote workers. Here's what's actually worth applying for in 2025, what the real requirements look like, and what your alternatives are if you don't yet meet the income thresholds.
What a digital nomad visa is (and isn't)
A digital nomad visa lets you legally live in a country while working remotely for clients or employers based outside that country. It does not mean you're working for a local company — in almost every program, local employment is explicitly prohibited.
Most programs require proof of remote income above a minimum threshold, valid health insurance, a clean criminal record, and accommodation documentation. Processing times range from 2 weeks (Georgia) to 3+ months (Costa Rica, Portugal in peak periods).
Critically: holding a digital nomad visa generally does not automatically create tax residency in the host country. But this varies — consult a tax professional before applying if your income is significant.
The best nomad visa programs right now
These are the programs most used by women digital nomads in 2025, with honest notes on the requirements and application experience.
- Portugal D8 Visa — €3,040/month minimum income. One of the most applied-for globally. Gateway to EU residency after 5 years. Strong expat infrastructure.
- Spain Digital Nomad Visa (2023) — €2,646/month minimum. Path to 5-year residency. Available for both employees and freelancers.
- Georgia Remotely from Georgia — No income minimum. 1-year program. Easiest application process of any country globally. 1% flat tax option available.
- Croatia Digital Nomad Residence Permit — €2,300/month. Up to 1 year, renewable. Beautiful country with growing nomad infrastructure.
- Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa — $3,000/month minimum. 2-year duration. Latin America's strongest program.
- Indonesia Bali E33G Visa — Launched 2023. $2,000/month minimum. 5-year visa with significant lifestyle benefits.
- Thailand LTR Visa — Long-Term Resident program. High income requirement ($80k+/year or $40k+ with employment) but the best benefits package in Asia.
- Greece Digital Nomad Visa — €3,500/month. EU access and one of Europe's most beautiful countries.
Alternative strategies if you don't qualify yet
Income requirements for nomad visas are designed for established remote workers. If you're earlier in your career or building freelance income, these alternatives let you live legally in great destinations while you grow.
- Tourist visa + remote work — legally gray, practically common. Works in countries where immigration doesn't scrutinize this heavily. Not recommended for countries with formal nomad visa programs, as the visa exists specifically to formalize this arrangement.
- Thailand Elite Visa — costs $3,000–$10,000 upfront but gives 5–20 years of legal stay with no income requirements.
- Malaysia MM2H (My Second Home) — complex process but gives 10 years of stay with a smaller financial deposit requirement than many alternatives.
- European long-stay D visas — several EU countries offer long-stay visas for self-employed people below the digital nomad visa income thresholds.
- Tax residency optimization — Georgia (1% flat tax), UAE (0% income tax), and several others have attractive frameworks; requires specialist tax advice.
What you actually need to apply
The requirements are broadly consistent across programs. Start collecting these documents before you need them — some take weeks to get apostilled or officially translated.
- Proof of income — 3–6 months of bank statements, employment contract, or client contracts with amounts clearly visible
- Health insurance with minimum €30,000 emergency coverage (most require this specific minimum)
- Criminal background check — apostilled, from your home country; takes 2–6 weeks in many countries
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
- Proof of accommodation — first month's rental contract or confirmed hotel booking
- Application fee — varies from $0 (Georgia) to $500+ (some Caribbean programs)
Timeline and practical advice
Start the process at least 2–3 months before you need the visa in place. Most government websites are significantly outdated — cross-reference with recent blog posts and Facebook group discussions from people who completed the process in the last 6 months.
For programs that require applying in-country (Portugal, for example, now requires you to apply from Portugal), plan your travel timeline around the processing window. The Facebook groups for each specific destination are the most accurate source of current processing times.
